Our hospitals and services
Hunter New England Health provides a range of public health services for more than 850,000 people from the Hunter, New England and Lower Mid North Coast regions.
Community health services
Provide access to a range of services including community nursing, counselling, oral health, hospital in the home, and health promotion.
Public hospitals
There are four main types of public hospitals within Hunter New England Health.
Community hospitals: Provide some primary care services, but predominantly offer low-level emergency, lower acuity and long stay care for their community.
District hospitals: Provide hospital and community health services. Patients requiring higher-level services not provided by the district health service are transferred to a rural referral hospital within or close to the same area.
Rural referral hospitals: Provide a range of core health services and clinical support. Rural referral hospitals may offer more complex/tertiary services locally or through formal networking arrangements with other tertiary facilities, including those in other local health districts.
Tertiary referral hospitals: As a minimum, tertiary referral hospitals should be able to provide for all but the most complex health needs. Tertiary referral hospitals are John Hunter Hospital, John Hunter Children’s Hospital and Calvary Mater Newcastle.
Multi-purpose services
Provide a mix of services that generally include lower acuity, residential aged care and community health services under a single organisational structure.
Mental health services
Provide treatment and care of inpatients with psychiatric disorders.
Rehabilitation services
Aim to return patients to peak potential function after a disabling event.
Residential aged care services
Offer high care residential aged care.
