Digestive Diseases Centre

Gastroenterology as a specialty was introduced in South Africa during the late 1950’s with the establishment of the Gastrointestinal Unit (GIT Clinic) at Groote Schuur Hospital. The Clinic has over the years enjoyed national and international recognition for outstanding clinical services and related research.
The Clinic also prides itself for pioneering an integrated medico-surgical service which was formally established with the move to the New Building in 1989. This move resulted in the development of multidisciplinary sub-specialties in the field of Gastroenterology and as such the Clinic has become a referral centre for the management of complex tertiary and quaternary gastroenterological diseases.
There is currently considerable medico-surgical expertise at a sub-specialist level and with support from allied specialties there is the ability to cover almost the entire field in Gastroenterology in a multi-disciplinary fashion “under the same roof”. The Clinic has now also extended its services to the UCTPAH.

OrthoUCT, located at UCT Private Hospital, is a group practice that provides sub-specialist orthopaedic surgery care.
The field of orthopaedic surgery has expanded greatly over time and this has led to the development of several sub-specialist fields within orthopaedic surgery. At OrthoUCT we are proud to offer expertise in each of the various sub-specialties, namely:
  • Spine surgery
  • Hip and knee reconstruction surgery
  • Knee replacement and sports injuries
  • Shoulder and elbow surgery
  • Hand surgery
  • Foot and ankle surgery
  • Orthopaedic trauma surgery
  • Pelvis and acetabulum reconstruction surgery
  • Knee reconstruction surgery
  • Paediatric orthopaedic surgery
  • Limb lengthening and reconstruction surgery
All of the surgeons at OrthoUCT are members of the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. They are academically active with teaching and research and recognised as leaders in their respective fields. Our involvement with an academic department ensures that our patients will receive care that is cutting edge, peer reviewed, evidence based and in line with best international orthopaedic practice.
Our practice is supported by numerous other medical specialists including anaesthetists and intensivists and physicians who are also members of the University of Cape Town academic staff.
We have dedicated physiotherapists to ensure early and effective rehabilitation of our patients.
The professional fees charged at OrthoUCT are based on practice costs and are in line with sub-specialist practices. Detailed quotations will be provided before any surgical intervention to establish potential medical aid shortfalls.
We look forward to being of assistance to you and your patients.
